World Champion solo boater Kent Ford is the instructor for this guide to techniques for solo whitewater paddlers. Allowing that this is for advanced canoers, not beginners, Ford sets about demonstrating how viewers can better control their boats in whitewater (not to mention making that baby get up and dance). He focuses on the importance of correct strokes: the forward stroke, the "J" stroke, the stern pry, etc., and demonstrates sculling and reverse paddling drills to further refine control of the boat. In addition, Ford discusses proper and safe outfitting as well as safety features to look for when choosing a boat. The program concludes with self-rescue tips and techniques, including an excellent demonstration of righting oneself after tipping over. Ford is an enjoyable and enthusiastic instructor who knows his craft, and knows how to share his knowledge with others. Good camerawork and solid instruction make Solo Playboating a winner. Highly recommended. (See PADDLE TO THE SEA for availability.)
