Fred Sautter, Principal Trumpet for the Oregon Symphony and Associate Professor of Music at Portland State University, is the host and instructor for this comprehensive guide to playing the trumpet. Although not a terribly stylish tape (the video image looks a bit washed out), the no-nonsense approach to learning the instrument will definitely aid the serious devotee of the trumpet. Subtitled a "technical book, in video...," the program is divided into "chapters" on breathing, air supply, tonguing (which includes fascinating x-rays of the mouth's movements while playing a trumpet), embouchure, tone and intonation, and technique. There's good emphasis on the physical requirements, and a stamina-building set of warm-up exercises is included in booklet form along with the tape. A bit pricey for the "how-to" market, Sound the Trumpet is, nevertheless, a solid introduction to the subject, and is recommended.
