Pam Maneeratana, “Master of Kae-Sa-Luk,” has been carving fruit and veggie centerpieces for 27 years. Following a brief overview of tools and supplies, Maneeratana demonstrates how to make three bird-shaped projects: a pineapple peacock with a large tail comprised of colorful fruits and vegetables, a cantaloupe dip-bowl, and a watermelon bird with intricately carved “feathers” and a flowery tail. Maneeratana is a cheerful host, full of encouragement for beginners (“Creating a centerpiece is fun!” “Try it out and don't be afraid of making mistakes.”), and she peppers her instruction with solid tips such as when it is safe to allow children to help with projects, and why it isn't a good idea to eat food from the centerpieces. Unfortunately, the program suffers from the background music, which occasionally drowns out soft-spoken Maneeratana, and ranges from Native American pan flutes and Middle Eastern music to an annoying series of xylophone runs. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
