Charming, humorous, and challenging, Ron Rolheiser addresses a group of mostly female seniors at the King's House Retreat and Renewal Center in Belleville, Illinois in this compilation of three lectures about the evolution of spiritual growth. For Rolheiser, this religious journey can be broken down into three levels of discipleship with specific tasks: "essential," in which we “leave home” as adolescents; "generative," in which we “return home” as adults; and "radical," in which we set out for our eternal home, ultimately reaching an ecstatic spiritual state. Each period shares common struggles--with ego, sexuality, anger, and attachments, and early on we “wrestle with the devil,” while in the second half of our spiritual journey we “wrestle with God.” Rolheiser provides insights regarding the various problems humans encounter and how they fit into each level of discipleship, but does not offer solutions. Still, the solid, provocative ideas presented here make this a worthwhile vehicle for individual introspection or group discussion. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Reed)
