While there are few challenges more sudden and life changing than surviving a major stroke, where simple tasks such as brushing one's teeth can seem impossible, the six stand-alone programs in the Stroke Help series provide genuine first aid to family members and caregivers in re-designing tasks to help the stroke survivor regain the maximum level of mobility, independence and dignity. Written and presented by occupational therapist Jan Davis, various tasks are demonstrated with a stroke survivor, with the overall objectives of the series being to improve awareness and encourage movement on the weak side, prevent tightness in limbs and joints, and promote independence. The first volume, Improving Function and Awareness, features tips and exercises for helping the stroke survivor begin the road to recovery, such as positioning the patient's weak side near the door so visitors approach from that side to increase movement, and learning to use both hands bi-laterally. The other volumes in the series are Self Care, Wheelchair Transfers, Preventing Shoulder Pain, Standing Safely and Bed Positioning and Mobility. Terrific for family members and caregivers, Stroke Help will be a real boon to anyone working with stroke survivors after they leave rehab. Incidentally, the same six titles are also available filmed and narrated specifically for healthcare professionals (under the series title The Stroke Education Series for Therapists and Nurses). Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (L. Stevens)
