We all know that unless you give respect, it's unlikely you'll get respect. In this interactive video workshop, kids will learn what respect is and why it's important. The format is simple: an engaging (and thankfully non-cheesy) host introduces each section (respect for feelings, for rules, for differences, for self), a situational skit is shown, and then questions are presented for discussion with the accompanying handouts. What makes this video stand out is the quality of the script, and the great acting of a talented multicultural middle-school-aged cast. The situations are realistic; the kids sound and act just like every other junior-high kid I've ever worked with, right down to the rolling eyeballs and attitudes. Middle school kids' humor practically revolves around put-downs, they often feel above the law (if the rule, or authority, isn't deemed "fair," why should they follow it?), and many have a worldview that is fairly self-centered. This is an effective exploration of the subject of respect with excellent accompanying curriculum materials which don't simply regurgitate the video, but flesh out issues brought up during the program. Highly recommended. Aud: I, J. (E. Gieschen)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
