Although the production values leave something to be desired, this comprehensive program about wilderness survival is jam packed with life-saving information. Combining a filmed lecture with dramatic recreations, Survive and Walk Out Alive covers several key survival areas: mental/physical health, protection, transportation, security, sustenance, knowledge, and equipment/supplies. Lecturer Dick Vogel, who has taught survival courses for 20 years, knows his subject well, and gives excellent pointers in areas most people wouldn't even stop to think about--until it was too late. The dramatic recreations feature Jerry Maloy who, when his plane went down in the wilderness, spent a total of 11 days alone before reaching help. Some people may be a bit put off by scenes which demonstrate how to eat insects for sustenance, if necessary. On the other hand, the name of the game is staying alive--while some of the activities described and shown in this program will not win points with Miss Manners, they will greatly increase one's chances for survival. Shot on video, the colors are a bit washed out, but the information is solid and comprehensive enough to recommend this title. (Available from: Long Shot Productions, P.O. Box 612, Ione, WA 99139.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
