Rich Johnson, a former Green Beret, introduces segments dealing with every aspect of safe winter travel and outdoor fun, and he does it in such a way as to make it both interesting and informative. Tire chains, the right kind of jacket to buy, how to build a snow cave, attracting attention if lost or needing help, recognizing the first signs of hypothermia and frostbite, stocking your car with necessary emergency provisions...and this just scratches the surface! Even young scouts will benefit from the information presented here as a number of topics are included in merit badge and camping work. Each segment is illustrated by examples shown in actual winter environments and the graphics are well-produced and easy to understand. The winter of 1997 was a rough one in most parts of the country and stories of persons surviving incredible hardships were common in the news. The increasing popularity of winter sports and outdoor activities has also resulted in an increase in accidents. If people have access to this video, many of those accidents may be avoided. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
