These three programs in the Take a Look 2 series introduce primary school children to basic scientific concepts. Each program features "Kate," an adult who, together with a young boy named "Jamie," explores the key elements of a topic. In Electricity, Jamie learns how electricity is conducted through various circuits, and what happens when the circuit is "broken." The activities include the making of a simple switch and a lighthouse, using batteries. In Magnets, Jamie discovers which materials are magnetic, and which aren't (some of which, like copper, a non-magnetic material, surprise him). Activities include making a magnet maze and a fishing pond using magnets. Sound explains the concept of sound waves, and demonstrates how the ear processes sounds. In one interesting sequence, Kate shows Jamie how sound waves look on an oscilloscope. Using a dog whistle, Jamie sees that sound is being produced even though his human ears can't hear it. Activities include making a stethoscope and simple musical instruments. Well-produced and enjoyable to watch, the Take a Look 2 series is recommended for primary schools and larger public libraries. The other seven titles in the series are: Air Pressure, Friction, Matter, Trees, Heat, Dairy Farm, and Time. (Available from: TVOntario, 143 W.
