Well-known singer/songwriter John Hartford, who is also an excellent multi-instrumentalist, proves to be a very casual banjo teacher who makes himself easily understood. In the first volume of this two-parter, Hartford deals with issues of tone, technique, harmonics and playing words/melody. He also offers some good suggestions on quick pickin', using a metronome, playing above the bridge, E-flat banjo tuning to make the most of your midrange, and playing accents and patterns. A fairly well-organized lesson which touches on a number of topics, this is not for beginners--Hartford does not, for instance, explain the rudiments of tuning the instrument or finger picking, or terms like "frailing." If your banjo fundamentals are in place, however, then Hartford has a lot of useful information here. The second volume is also available for $29.95 or $49.95 for the two-tape set. Highly recommended for advanced beginners. Aud: J, H, C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
