A revised edition of a program originally released in 1986, The Bird Care Video is an exceptionally interesting, informative, and professional guide to the subject, presented by radio host and aviculturist Lee Matthew and avian veterinarian Dr. Robert Shelley. Matthew opens by discussing the six warning signs that suggest a bird may be sick (inactivity, changes in bird droppings, ruffled feathers, etc.), and then together with Shelley outlines and demonstrates various techniques for caring for sick birds. Viewers learn how to restrain a bird (generally, a towel is plenty), conduct a physical examination, give oral medications as well as injections, feed birds using the gavage tube feeding method, and treat simple injuries such as broken nails and the removal of blood feathers. (The program stresses that serious emergencies should be handed over to the care of a professional.) In addition, viewers learn methods for wing clipping and nail trimming. The program concludes with a segment on emergency tube feeding of wildlife birds that shows people what to do in the event of an environmental crisis (an oil spill, for example, where an emergency rescue effort may be required from the community.) An excellent program, sure to be appreciated by bird lovers, The Bird Care Video is highly recommended. (Available from: LAM Productions, 15031 "B" Military Rd. S., Suite 132, Seattle, WA 98188.)
