Currently, one of eleven women can expect to contract breast cancer sometime during her life. This half-hour program shows women the correct procedure for breast self-examination in Part 1, and goes through the procedure for a mammography in Part 2. Although 80% of all lumps found in the breast turn out to be benign, newer surgical techniques have made it possible for early detection of malignant tumors to result in only the lump being removed. The statistics are serious enough to warrant the extra few minutes each month. The American Cancer Society gives annual predictions of up to 120,000 cases of breast cancer being diagnosed. Of these, it is likely that 40,000 women will die. The AMC, in addition to recommending the self-exam, advises women to have a baseline mammogram done about once every three years. This is a good program, though 30 minutes is too long for the subject--an equally effective tape could have been made in 10. Recommended for larger libraries. (See LE LOUVRE for availability).
