When it comes to buying a new car, many people pay too much, choose the wrong financing plan, or fail to receive a good trade-in value for their used car. Following a fictional couple's efforts to buy a new car, The Cambridge Car Buying System takes viewers through the steps of research, getting advice, investigating the particulars of the car they've chosen, and negotiating the best deal. The program does a good job of explaining where the car dealership makes its profits (dealer mark-up, options, extended warranties and additional insurance, financing, and trade-in) and how the viewer, armed with current information, and ready to drive a hard bargain, can save a bundle in these areas. Ordinarily, we would recommend a general program like this that offers solid and useful consumer information. However, since timeliness is not an issue here, there are programs of similar or better quality on the market for far less money. Consumer Reports: Cars (reviewed in our June 1986 issue) and How to Buy a Vehicle Without Being Taken for a Ride (reviewed in our October 1989 issue) are better bargains. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
