An entertaining look behind the making of a picture book, The Educated Eye combines excerpts from a 1990 ALA ALSC pre-conference and interviews with illustrators and publishers to give viewers a feel for the choices that go into creating a picture book. From Kate Greenaway to David Macauley, the program offers a generous sample of renowned illustrator's works during the past 100 years, and features comments from illustrator's Ashley Bryan, Barry Moser, and Nancy Burkhert, as well as publisher's George Nicholson (Dell), Margaret McElderry (McElderry Books/Atheneum), and Ava Weiss (Greenwillow Books). Although the purpose of the program is to provide something of an historical overview of exemplary models of picture books and train viewers to have an "educated eye," no 15-minute program could possibly accomplish this. But the tape does spark the interest for more, and may well lead viewers on to the print resources listed on the inside of the tape box. Recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
