With the popularity of braiding, and particularly French braiding, this video would seem to be a natural choice for public libraries. Instructor Nancy Wright begins by demonstrating a basic braid, and then shows viewers step-by-step how to create several different french braid styles (including one in reverse-a popular braid for girls involved in sports). Underbraiding, overbraiding, double-strand overlaps, and an elevated French braid are each seen in close-up. A low-budget production, The Gorgeous Braids Video begins with fairly steady instruction, but as the tape goes on and many of the same steps are being repeated, a musical soundtrack takes the place of instruction. The tape concludes with the rather tricky feat of French braiding one's own hair. My major complaint with the video is that the instruction seems geared to white women only. Given the popularity of braiding among black women especially, the narrow focus of this program is particularly disappointing. Certainly, a broader approach to the subject is still needed.
