Profiling three survivors of incest, this program examines the profound effects of child sexual abuse on individuals, families, and society, and emphasizes the lifelong recovery process these survivors undergo. We meet former Miss America Marilyn Van Derbur, president of Glide Memorial Church Janice Mirikitani, and 78-year-old Barbara Hamilton, who faced three generations of sexual abuse in her family. Interviews, letters, journal entries, discussions with supportive family members, scenes of counseling and group sessions, segments showing the women's activist-work, and 8mm home film footage all illustrate these women's stories, while poems and prose written by Mirikitani dramatize the intense emotions often difficult for survivors to articulate. Intended primarily for "therapists to support the process of recovery for rape and incest survivors and their families," this tape is not specifically targeted toward the general public, but it could assuredly find a place in well-funded library collections interested in a broader selection of materials in this important area. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
