It is estimated that one out of five American couples can't have a child on their own. But roughly half of these couples can be helped with the wide array of treatments currently available. From the award-winning producer of Cancer: Just a Word...Not a Sentence (reviewed in our May 1989 issue), Tobe Carey, and his wife Meg, The Infertility Tape: A Couple's Guide was created out of the experiences the Carey's had with trying to conceive and their efforts to get as much first-hand information as possible from couples in similar situations. Viewers will learn the facts about sperm tests, taking basal body temperature, endometrial biopsies, and hysterosalpingograms, among other evaluative procedures from Dr. John Stangel and Dr. William Butler. But the real strength of the program is in the interviews with actual couples. Infertility and/or repeated miscarriages are sensitive issues, and viewers will appreciate hearing the stories of couples who have taken the journey--their failures and their successes, and best of all an idea of what to expect. With newer procedures such as in vitro fertilization coming into more widespread use, the percentage of couples who hear the word "no" is decreasing all the time. By the end of the program the couples shown have explored many different options, some leading to natural childbirth, while others have chosen adoption. The Infertility Tape: A Couple's Guide is an excellent resource for couples to look at their options and listen to the people who have already made the choices. There's even a good directory of organizations listed at the end of the program where viewers can turn for more information. Highly recommended, and a good supplement to the similarly themed Pathways to Parenthood (reviewed in the March 1991 issue). (Available from: Willow Mixed Media, Inc., P.O.
