Based on the book of the same name by Scot McKnight, The Jesus Creed combines the words of Deuteronomy 6: 4, 5 (“Hear O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength”) with the famous dictum of Leviticus 19:18 (“Love your neighbor as yourself”) to form a mantra that—like the Jewish practice of shema—can be repeated upon arising, throughout the day, and upon retiring for the night. McKnight, a professor in religious studies, uses it here as the basis for seven short segments exploring our relationship to God and neighbors, combining his own practical and relevant observations (which have a solid basis in scripture) together with comments from others living by the creed. Offering spiritual exercises for bolstering love of God and one's neighbors, this is recommended. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
