Although the calendar dates the 19th century from 1800-1900, Professor Robert I. Weiner of Lafayette College takes the long view for The Teaching Company's "Great Courses" entry The Long 19th Century: European History from 1789 to 1917, a 36-part lecture series chronicling the social, political, cultural, and economic upheavals in Europe from the French Revolution up to the point that America entered World War I. Divided into three periods, the series covers the age of revolution (1789-1848), the period leading up to the unification of Germany (1849-1871), and the impact of the "second" Industrial Revolution, as well as the rise of nationalism (what Weiner calls "the most powerful secular religion of the age") and the onset of WWI (1871-1914). Throughout, Weiner examines the tension between Old European continuity and the escalating pressure for changes across a wide spectrum. In addition, the professor focuses on the emergence of the masses as a true historical force--from mass society to mass culture. Examining key developments in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and Russia, Weiner assures the viewer that while the opening material might seem confusing due to both the complicated multidisciplinary lines of thought and the large cast of characters (i.e. nations), the big picture will eventually begin to form. Unfortunately, some of the fault lies in Weiner's convoluted semantics in the initial lectures, but this problem disappears as the series progresses, and Weiner moves from larger abstract generalizations to specifics. Packaged with a three-part course book containing the full transcript, overview, outline, glossary, suggested bibliography, and more, college students will find this series to be a fine supplement for coursework, while public library patrons will appreciate the opportunity to explore new topics without the rigor of deadlines or the financial burden of tuition.
