This is a pleasant look at a small, but flavorful, Northeast American industry: the making of maple sugar. Beginning with an introduction to the old Iroquois legends concerning "Indian sugar", the program goes on to explore the use of maple sugar as a quick source of energy for early settlers, the inauguration of the practice of collecting the sap from maple trees (first in wooden, and later in steel, buckets), and outlines the steps involved in converting the sap to maple sugar. Filmed in Vermont, this is an interesting look at what goes on during the maple sugar season, which is surprisingly brief -ranging from 23 weeks for a short season, and 6-8 weeks for a long season. The tape is also enhanced by the narration of folksinger Margaret MacArthur, who sings and plays the lovely "Maple Sweet" song. Recommended.
