Is Halloween a harmless trick or treat time for kids or a dangerous relic which celebrates evil? Supporters of either theory will probably find something to back up their claim here. Although Halloween's origins are forever shrouded in the mists of history, the video discusses the contributions of the Druids and the early Christian church, and explains the holiday's bygone importance as a harvest festival, a milestone by which to mark the days of waning sun and the onset of winter, and a symbolic door between the living world and whatever lay beyond. Other topics include the significance of Halloween night bonfires, black cats, jack-o-lanterns, the witch's broom, trick or treating, and other Halloween customs and icons. Unfortunately, the video is marred by poor sound, and some of the images make it questionable for school use. More folklore experts and scholars should have been consulted, and some will question why a male follower of wicca is repeatedly quoted. Overall, a disappointment, especially considering its high price tag. Not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (S. Rees)
