True to its title, this basic production follows artist and teacher Terence Coyle into the New England Berkshires where, after a brief glimpse of his subject--cottages nestled in a bucolic setting--he paints and "thinks out loud" as viewers look over his shoulder. Although Coyle is a gifted watercolorist and a pleasant enough instructor, the video doesn't really work as art instruction for several reasons: 1) we are rarely shown Coyle's palette and therefore have little idea about the colors being mixed, 2) after an initial shot of the "subject," we never see it again, and therefore have no way of "seeing" how Coyle transforms the landscape on the canvas, and 3) since Coyle is, as he says, "thinking out loud," instructing the viewing audience is a corollary, not primary, concern. For $70, I think one could reasonably expect more than incidental instruction. Not recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Pitman)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
