Fitness Magazine recently named J.B. Berns “One of the Top 10 Personal Fitness Trainers,” and I don't think it was because J.B. opened up a can of whoop-ass on ‘em and made them say it; I think he's the real deal. The program begins with Berns, creator of the Urban Rebounding craze and a practicing martial artist with over 20 years experience, demonstrating an impressive series of poses called Goju Ryu Karate, which look like tai-chi moves with attitude. Viewers are cautioned to watch the entire 30-minute workout, after which Berns spends another 30 minutes dissecting his moves, explaining proper technique, and instructing the audience (intended for intermediate and advanced followers of martial arts) in the finer points of self-defense and street fighting. Berns stresses that these exercises are intended to increase energy and universal balance, not muscle, though he assures viewers that “bulk is a byproduct” of this total body workout, which includes warm-up drills, stances, blocks, strikes, and punches. Although designed for martial arts purposes, this workout would also be welcomed by exercise enthusiasts and serious athletes looking for something a little different. Recommended. [Note: Berns also has six Urban Rebounding compilations (using a mini-trampoline) and Kids Bound: Urban Rebounding available on VHS or DVD for $24.95 each.] Aud: P. (N. Plympton)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
