Aaron Jacobs, owner of Reel Extras casting service in Tacoma, WA, provides practical, solid advice for adults wanting to help their children break into the “biz” in this primer that incorporates onscreen vocabulary coupled with tips, shortcuts, and red flags. Jacobs explains the ins and outs—from contacting a good agent (who should only get paid when you do) to being honest about what “type” your child falls into (with the suggestion of looking at other ads for a frame of reference). Along the way, viewers learn about auditions (during a vignette in which a young “actress” and parent illustrate the process), headshots, resumes, and unions, as well as important questions to ask before signing anything (regarding fee structure, etc.). A bonus disc includes resume templates, mailing labels, numbers for top agents across the U.S., pay rates, and more. The Smart Stage Mom offers a realistic view of the steps involved in entering show business while noting that having fun, effectively handling rejection, and following the child's dream—not one's own—are paramount for success. A slightly revised version titled Move Over, Miley—aimed at ‘tweens and teens—is also available at the same price. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
