Accredited fitness instructor Ellen Barrett and her infant son Luca deliver a full “bond-with-baby workout” in this program that includes three gentle 10-minute routines. For the “Cardio” segment, Barrett suggests using a baby carrier (with one hand on the child at all times) for moves such as marching, skier squat, leg lifts, step taps, punches, and V-steps. Focusing on the abs, obliques, and lower back, the “Core” routine places the youngster in a stroller or bassinet while mom works on arm pulses, spinal roll-downs, kicks, and stretches. The final sit-down “Calm” section incorporates various stretches such as shoulder roll, backstrokes, and hamstrings while showering the baby with kisses and nuzzling. Speaking for mothers, Barrett notes that “we don't have the time, so we really need efficient workouts.” The low-impact Happy Baby, Fit Mama lives up to its name—with little Luca smiling and sucking his thumb right on cue.
