Adopting a TV newsmagazine format, this kid-hosted program on sun safety, aimed at grades 1-3, looks at the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, and outlines the basics of sun-safe behavior in interviews with both adults and children, as well as animated segments. Young viewers will learn about applying sunscreen (“put on a lot; don't miss a spot!”), wearing the right hat, choosing protective clothing, and seeking shade, among other safety measures. Produced by a nonprofit affiliate of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Dermatological Society, the emphasis here is rather narrow, focusing on skin protection and sunburn (nothing about the need for hydration or dangers of heat exhaustion). Overall, however, this is a practical and affordable guide that doesn't just give lists of “do's and don'ts,” but aims to instill healthy habits at an early age. [Note: this is also available in a similarly-priced 31-minute version for grades 4-6 that features more coverage of skin cancer and the risks associated with artificial tanning, or with both versions on the same videocassette or disc for $34.95]. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
