Cited by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the up and coming professions of the '90s, mobile disc jockeying is a minimal capital investment business with some very handsome returns. In fact, writer/host/DJ Joey Thyer pulls down about $400 for spinning tunes at a 4-hour wedding reception. The Video Guide to Earning Money as a Mobile Disc Jockey is a low-budget, but well-arranged and information-packed, guide to the vital steps in setting up and running a successful business as a mobile DJ. Thyer and other professional DJ's in the New York City area offer tips and instruction on setting up a business, networking, selecting equipment, insurance, spinning and mixing techniques, novelty dances, music selection, and much more. One of my favorite shots was of a plastic card: the camera pulls back to show Thyer saying: "This is a library card. It's a great idea for saving money." The only bothersome aspect of the production is the handful of trade-specific commercials during the program. Otherwise, this is an excellent guide to a new and flourishing business from an insider's viewpoint (during the section on equipment, Thyer says that you can drop big bucks on a mixer, but "Radio Shack sells a $100 mixer that works great.") Young adults looking for new ways to squander their parent's savings will really love this...and if they follow the suggestions, they might be able to pay Mom and Dad back with interest.
