In this new 36-lecture series from The Teaching Company's “Great Courses” line, Professor Kenneth W. Harl of Tulane University in New Orleans proves to be well-versed in the subject—despite the fact that his fields of specialization are actually classical and Byzantine history—delivering clear and detailed talks that also have a nicely spontaneous air, while on the visual side, maps and images are inserted at appropriate points, and names and unusual terms are displayed at the bottom of the screen. The subject itself is a rich one that, as Harl quite rightly points out, can act as an entrée to medieval history more broadly defined, since a study of “the Northmen” involves not only the Scandinavian territories but also England, Ireland, France, Russia, the Byzantine Empire, Sicily, and southern Italy—as well as Iceland, Greenland, and North America. The Vikings also goes well beyond political and military history, touching on matters religious, artistic, and literary, all covered by Harl with sureness and skill (although at times he seems rushed trying to do them justice). Separately available course guidebooks include lecture transcripts, timelines, glossaries, outlines, and bibliographies. Sure to be a welcome addition for high school and academic libraries (to supplement their own regular or distance ed courses, or for students wishing to explore topics not offered by their local institution) and a solid choice for public libraries serving adult learners, this is recommended.
