“Unfortunately medical errors can occur in today's complex medical environment,” viewers are told in this brief program featuring real patients, who relate horror stories about medical errors and botched surgeries, while also sharing tips on what to expect and do before and during a hospital stay. The most commonly repeated advice is to have a “patient advocate” before being admitted (the advocate can be a spouse, family member, friend, or—of course—an attorney). Other suggestions include: find out if the hospital is well-known for a particular surgery/procedure (and how many your doctor has successfully performed); bring a list of all current medications and nutrition supplements to the hospital; and make sure postoperative instructions are clear. Things You Should Know Before Entering the Hospital has the look and feel of a local news consumer affairs segment, and is funded by the hardly partial lawyer-led Partnership for Patient Safety (although a portion of the sales proceeds will go to the “consumer-led” organization Consumers Advancing Patient Safety). Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
