This informative how-to features the appropriately named Louise Cutting—a contributing editor for Threads magazine—who shares a dozen detailing techniques for turning a garment into something special, from curing the “gaposis” caused by too much fabric bunching around a neckline, to “pegging” a skirt by narrowing it at the hemline to create a more svelte silhouette, to new ideas for unusual buttonholes and shirt cuffs. Cutting's instructions can seem complex, but she patiently breaks them down into small doable steps. She even has tips for dealing with the scary business of adjusting tissue paper patterns. Although subjects such as trimming a dolman sleeve or adding a dart may seem trivial or limited to specific projects or patterns, the overall skills here are well worth knowing, as anyone who sews could benefit from a better understanding of how to clip a seam before turning a collar, or how to evenly space buttonholes. And in an acknowledgment of the inevitable, Cutting thoughtfully covers how to fix mistakes too. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (F. Gardner)
