“All these things I talk about—it's simply my attitude and what I want my pots to be. You may use and do things differently to get them the way you want them to be.” Taped at the North Carolina Pottery Center, this master class/workshop with Tom Turner features six hours of instruction, demonstration, and student interaction compiled on four discs, along with a gallery of 34 of Turner's favorite pots from as many years. Topics include wedging, throwing (small bowls, a lidded jar, and a teapot), glazes, joining pieces for larger pots, and a look at how various lids affect the overall visual impression of a particular piece. Featuring good camerawork with lots of helpful close-ups, together with pleasant original music by Joe Penland, Turner's presentation—unfortunately—is difficult to navigate (although a paper table of contents is included, the program is not divided into individual chapters, and much of the presentation consists of straightforward real-time raw footage). Beginners are unlikely to be interested in this sprawling production, but serious potters will find much to appreciate here. Recommended for larger collections. Aud: C, P. (R. Reagan)

This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
