Although the Northeast is the smallest region of the United States, it also boasts the largest population (as was dramatically illustrated on the blue state/red state map in the 2004 presidential election). Why? The answer to this and other questions are reached using geography clues in this excellent DVD that is divided into three segments, each of which begin with critical thinking questions. The opening section covers basic map skills, terminology, and types of maps; the second looks at natural resources (recyclable, renewable, and non-renewable), offering specific examples from the Northeast region; and the final segment explores the rise of urban centers along the eastern seaboard, including Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City. The entire program can be watched or, in a very useful feature, viewed by content according to curriculum units. Part of the U.S. Geography series, other titles include The Midwest, The South, and The West. Highly recommended. Aud: E, I. (E. Gieschen)
