When was the last time you heard a ukulele? Unless you've been to Hawaii lately, it's probably been from the background music of an early Bugs Bunny cartoon. That's a shame, especially as this little four-stringed instrument that can make a big sound is enjoying a sort of renaissance in the hands of contemporary Hawaiian musicians. Instructor Bob Brozman presents here a solid overview of ukulele techniques and styles, including the combination of unique triplet strumming strokes with almost banjo-like finger picking. The uke's percussive thud against the nylon strings provides the unique rhythmic foundation for all sorts of Hawaiian music, never more evident than when Brozman switches to guitar and is joined by noted Hawaiian musician Ledward Kaapana on ukulele for a couple of tunes rich in the rhythms of the islands. The producers make good use of split screen--even on such a small instrument, it's helpful to see both hands from different angles to learn the nuances of the finger work--and the enclosed booklet has all of the selections written in tab.
