It's nice to see the instructor in a beginner's video using an instrument within the financial reach of those just starting out, instead of some mega-expensive holy-grail vintage axe. In this video, mandolinist John David makes beautiful music with the type of mandolin many beginners can afford (which can provide motivation in itself). In a warm, friendly presentation, David offers a brief history of the instrument (a descendent of the Italian Lute); instruction in holding a pick, playing a simply melody, and fingering basic chords; and tips on proper care of the mandolin. My only gripe is that no attention is given to rhythm playing, which is the backbone of all music, and especially important in the bluegrass genre. At $9.95, however, it's a small complaint.
