Hosted by Emmy-winning cameraman and diver Steve Miller, Underwater Video Basics presents a primer on underwater videography shot in the stunningly beautiful waters near the Caribbean island of Curacao. Although even snorkelers can make use of many of the techniques presented here, the program is designed for certified divers. Miller offers a detailed overview of the basic technology, checking off the pros and cons of standard and high-definition cameras (and reminding viewers that they will need a high-quality waterproof housing), while also covering the basics of packing and unpacking equipment. During the actual shoot, viewers are shown the proper way to enter the water with a camera, how to manipulate the manual controls for optimum underwater cinematography, and various enviro-friendly techniques for achieving different shots (with special attention paid to leaving no footprint on the ecosystem). Highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
