Why do some kids turn to violent solutions so readily? Perhaps because they don't have the tools to recognize and deal with trouble. Parents have the primary responsibility to equip their children with workable intervention strategies, and be part of the problem-solving as well. Hosted by actor Dick Van Patten, this video's title is a bit misleading; the program is really more about arbitration, crisis avoidance, and conflict resolution for middle-school-aged kids. In fact, only the last third of the video is specifically aimed at helping parents teach their children peaceful solutions, though kids themselves could benefit from watching the re-enactments of familiar conflicts and the ways they are solved. Unfortunately, the acting is a bit forced, and the out-of-sync dialogue track is distracting. However, the accompanying material is well-written, practical, and more focused than the video. An optional purchase. A second title in the series, What Middle-School Teachers and Students Should Know, is also available. Aud: J, P. (E. Gieschen)
