Armed with an array of watercolor pencils, an electric pencil sharpener, an electric eraser (takes off everything but cellulite and wrinkles), good buckle-free paper, and artist Sandra Angelo's techniques, viewers who have previously watched their watercolor efforts run like a flash flood for the edges of the canvas, will appreciate the control and precision offered by this portable and extremely versatile medium. After demonstrating the various techniques, Angelo illustrates many of the methods shown in a step-by-step drawing of a flower, and points out many ways that watercolor pencils can be creatively combined with pen and ink, water-soluble graphite pencils, and watercolor paints themselves. My only quibble is that while her enthusiasm remains strong and vibrant (after 18 videos, 4 books, 50 magazine columns, and numerous TV appearances), she sometimes has a tendency to speak too quickly. Still, she packs a lot of wisdom and instruction into 60 minutes and legions of aspiring artists will appreciate both the hands-on expert instruction and the attention to detail. Highly recommended. [Note: Discover Art! is offering Angelo's new book, Exploring Colored Pencil and 10 companion videos for $395. In addition to Watercolor Pencils: The Portable Medium, the other titles include: Getting Started with Color Pencils, Special Effects with Colored Pencils, Time Saving Colored Pencil Techniques, Drawing Your Loved Ones: People (VL-1/98), Drawing Your Loved Ones: Pets, Building a Nature Sketchbook (VL-1/98), Realistic Colored Pencil Textures (VL-9/97) and Drawing with Colored Pencils on Wood.] Aud: J, H, C, P.
