If you're still sitting on the fence over whether or not to spring for that pet lizard you've always wanted, this tape may be the deciding factor. Lizard expert Pete Mackevich is the host and instructor for this comprehensive guide to life in the saurian lane. Although unable to cover all 3,750 species of lizard, Mackevich looks at representative examples from a wide variety of families: geckos, iguanas, basilisks, chameleons, monitor lizards, skinks, and other cold-blooded cuddlies. Following a general introduction to raising lizards as pets, the video features a "who's who" of lizards, and rates species according to their ease of care, ease of handling, and ease of breeding. Breeding is covered in greater detail in a section on breeding set-ups (looking at the variables of heat, light, water, space, and even background radio--a female gecko may look twice if "He's So Fine" is boppin' away). The tape also offers suggestions for housing, feeding, and basic medical treatments for lizards. Although the information is very good, the video quality is passable at best, with attempts at humor that are alternately lame or corny. However, given the fact there's precious little else to choose from on the subject, libraries may want to consider this. And if you're still wondering whether a lizard is right for you personally, put this in your crawlspace: iguanas can roam the house freely and cause no problems. I'll see you at the store. What Kind of Pet is a Lizard? is technically poor, but information rich. You decide. (Available from: Peak Performance Group, 211 Barrett St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411; (717) 587-4570.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
