Dr. John Corvino, an associate professor of philosophy at Wayne State University, is also known as “The Gay Moralist” for addressing ethical issues surrounding homosexuality in various books, articles, and lectures (such as this one). Despite Corvino's academic credentials, What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?—delivered before a live audience at his university—avoids a dense, scholarly approach, instead adopting a conversational tone and making good use of humor and personal anecdote as he confronts the objections (including arguments from Scripture) most often raised against the gay lifestyle because of its supposed immorality. In some respects, Corvino is more like a standup comedian than an academic lecturer—and even looks a bit like a young Johnny Carson, with a similar command of the double-take and pregnant pause. Corvino's well-reasoned, relatively lighthearted presentation may not actually break down entrenched prejudices in a single stroke, but thanks to his calm and commonsensical approach, more people are likely to listen to what he has to say. DVD extras include a half-hour audience Q&A session. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (F. Swietek)
