Another wonderful argument for the versatility and superiority of the video medium in some areas. Short of hands-on instruction, no book or magazine article can convey the delicate art of wheel-thrown pottery. Artist Gary Roehborn, a self-styled "functional" potter, demonstrates the correct procedure for creating a pitcher. Following an explanation of the basic pottery terms, Roehburn takes viewers step-by-step through kneading the clay, throwing and centering it on the wheel, shaping the pitcher, trimming, creating a handle, firing, glazing, and decorating. An off-camera narrator describes each step, and adds a good deal of background information on the history and aesthetics of pottery (with several examples shown). Excellent close-ups and split-screen photography are expertly utilized. A 12-page reference guide describing terms, explaining procedures, and offering practical tips is included with the video. Highly recommended for school art classes and public libraries which serve a large arts and crafts clientele. (See ANDREW WYETH: THE HELGA PICTURES for availability).

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
