The difference between this relatively expensive big red fire truck video and its home video brethren is the difference between a tape made for instruction/guidance and one made for entertainment. Viewers will not see fire engines careening around corners with sirens wailing, nor much footage of firefighters engaged in battling infernal blazes; they will, however, learn the basics of a career in firefighting, from the educational requirements (high school diploma, with good math and science skills) to a realistic assessment of what the daily routine of a firefighter might entail (rescue missions involving people and animals, community education, and constant preparedness and maintenance). The framing device has a handful of 10-year-old students touring their local fire station and learning about the job, as well as the physical and written exams and oral interviews that candidates are required to complete. The accompanying curriculum provides good questions and follow-up activities. Recommended. Those looking for a more commercial, low-priced effort should consider Fire Busters (VL-7/96). Aud: E, I. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
