You'd think that a lawn care solution that involves so much less--little watering, less mowing, no fertilizing, reduced pollution from mowing exhaust, and lower gasoline costs--would be insanely popular in this country, but wildflower gardening has been rather slow to catch on, perhaps because people mistakenly think that shaking out any “wildflower seed mix” onto their existing lawns will work. In this excellent tape, produced by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, host Tom Huggler provides a step-by-step how-to guide for making successful wildflower plantings, from plant choice and site preparation to growing tips and techniques. The program also emphasizes the importance of prairie grass restoration, though people living in cities with mowing requirements may have a hard time convincing officials that their overgrown lawn is really an authentic prairie. Environmentally sound and novice-friendly, this is highly recommended. [Note: this is also available in an identically priced CD-ROM version.] Aud: P. (R. Reagan)
