Robert Louis Stevenson called wine "bottled poetry," but many of us tend to think of it as a social headache. Should we go with red or white? Should we choose a fruity beaujolais, or a more versatile chardonnay? Under the able guide of host Bob Bellus, Wine: Pure & Simple tells viewers what they need to know in order to be wine knowledgeable, while at the same time dispelling some of the traditional myths that have been associated with wine. In the first half of the program, Bellus visits the vineyards, where viewers are given a first-hand tour of the art and science of winemaking. In the second half of the program, viewers learn the differences between the generic and varietal wines, and are introduced, with the help of Master Sommelier Fred Dame, to wine tasting. After stating that since all palates are different there are "no absolutes," Dame and Bellus sample some white and red wines, remarking on the qualities of each, and making suggestions--by no means cast in stone--as to the types of food that go well with the wine. The tape concludes with tips on where to find more information on wine, as well as serving and storage suggestions. There's even a great method for opening a champagne bottle without giving your spouse, lover, or guest a third eye. Highly recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
