These two programs are comprised of role play sessions between teens and therapist Steven Campbell. Outlining what Campbell calls the "game triangle"--which is automatically engaged any time a hostile or resistant teen meets with a counselor and the parties take the roles of victim, rescuer, or persecutor. The role play sessions tend to run on too long, and Campbell is compelled to put everything he says into the terms he has set up at the beginning--it doesn't matter if a sequence doesn't quite fit the predetermined mold, it's given the nearest psychological label, and the program moves on. Too, in one staged session, a student's expletives are bleeped (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) to the point where it's difficult to understand some of the sentences. What's weird is that even during Campbell's later analysis the word "shit" is bleeped throughout. Given that this program is aimed at junior and senior high school counselors, not students, the bleeping seems misplaced. While some of Campbell's insights would be helpful, and his handling of potentially explosive situations is often instructive, we would not recommend these programs for anyone other than school counselors.
