And now I've one more item to add to my list of things to do and see (in person, as opposed to merely on video): I want to go to Barbados during Christmas, because if the sample of "O, Come All Ye Faithful" performed here reggae style is any indication, then Christmas caroling in the Caribbean truly rocks. Pentecostalism--Caribbean Christmas, one of a 10-part series (entitled Worlds of Faith on the actual tapes), offers a brief introduction to the Pentecostal faith, along with a profile of 18-year-old Nicole Davis. Nicole, a Barbados teen, is a member of the Abundant Life Assembly who speaks of her recent conversion and is seen playing the part of Mary in a Nativity play. Viewers will learn that Pentecostalism is the 3rd largest Christian denomination (subject to debate), that Pentecostalism originated in Los Angeles around the turn of the century (also subject to debate--some would say Topeka, KS--though L.A. seems right, especially since everybody there speaks in tongues), and that Pentecostal adherents believe the Bible is the literal word of God. More slices of life than detailed examinations of religious movements, the World Religions series would still make a fine supplement for use with core curriculum materials. Other titles in the series include: Hinduism: Elephant God, Russian Orthodox: Russian Rites, Animism: Living in the Dreamtime, Judaism: Bar Mitzvah Boys and Islam: Sacrifice to Allah. Aud: J, H, P. (R. Pitman)
