Directed and performed by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming, this introduction to Tai Chi Chuan, which illustrates the style of Yang Chen-fu, effectively uses split-screen visuals, multiple camera angles, and slow-motion to demonstrate the fundamental stances, drills, complete 112-move solo sequence and martial arts applications of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. Dr. Jwing Ming emphasizes the importance of proper breathing and relaxed, fluid movements in practicing Tai Chi Chuan. And unlike some of the other martial arts, Tai Chi Chuan is not solely, or even primarily, a form of hand-to-hand combat. Although the moves, which have such wonderful names as "Step Back and Repulse Monkey" and "Fair Lady Weaves at Shuttle" can be adapted to be used as martial arts fighting techniques, the solo sequence is used by many as a form of deeply meditative exercise/dance. Although the program stands alone, both the cover and the video itself refer to the books Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan and Advanced Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan Vols.1 & 2. A good martial arts program, straightforward in its information, and refreshingly pacific in its presentation (unlike some other programs which laud the destructive capabilities of martial arts). Recommended. (See ALDO LEOPOLD: A PROPHET FOR ALL SEASONS for availability.)
