Part of Goldhil's Oriental Secrets series, this well-done tape presents the 22 postures of the Yi Chin Ching, a set of isometric exercises developed by the monk Tamo in 6 A.D. Performed from a standing position and involving no leg movements, per se, these postures are "muscle-tendon change classics" which encompass an alternating tensing and relaxing of the muscles, accompanied by deep abdominal breathing. The goal here is not to expend the most energy possible, resulting in a shortening of the breath--as in Western exercise--but total relaxation and slow, smooth breathing, bringing on a light, nimble feeling. But strength is a goal, too; the "outer strength" referred to in the title involves the muscle and bone, as opposed to the "inner strength" (nerves and inner organs) of other forms of Eastern training. With personal trainer Kenneth Michael Terry and two women guiding us, each exercise is fully and straightforwardly explained, accompanied by soothing music and constant reminders to tense our muscles from the inside out and to breath, breath, breath. Exercise videos of all types will always be strong circulators in libraries, and I can recommend this one highly--and not only because I have now "fully tapped into my ocean of chi" either! Aud: P. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
