Nicely filmed on a lush green cliff overlooking the bright blue Pacific Ocean, Yoga for Beginners features instructor Elena Brower, who gently guides viewers through a series of basic yoga poses, while concentrating on the Ujjayi breathing technique (inhaling and exhaling through the nose to fill the lungs and the lower belly with oxygenating energy). One of New York City's top yoga teachers (her students include Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, and Minnie Driver, among others), Bower's approach is both encouraging and calming, and she offers modifications for many of the poses here (which include standing poses and sun salutation, various twists and hip openers, backbends, and stretches), finishing up with a relaxation segment and short meditation. Overall, this is a solid program for beginners. Recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
