An estimated 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from scoliosis (curvature of the spine), with women outnumbering men 7-to-1. Yoga for Scoliosis is a unique and motivating exercise program that illustrates how viewers can use yoga to minimize the discomfort and pain of this spinal condition and other back-related problems. Onscreen host Elise Browning Miller, who has practiced the Iyengar style of yoga to help ease the effects of her own scoliosis, guides viewers through basic yoga poses to lengthen the spine, wall exercises and standing poses to strengthen the back, and floor and relaxing poses to de-rotate the spine and align the hips. Miller discusses breathing techniques, explains the benefits of many of the poses, and suggests modifications throughout the program. Combining clear instruction, appropriate music, and excellent camerawork, this nicely-staged production will appeal to a wide variety of people suffering from spinal imbalances, sports injuries, and stress-related problems involving the back muscles. DVD extras include interviews with Miller and with orthopedic surgeon Peter Slabaugh M.D., and additional yoga poses. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
