You Can Quit! How to Stop Smoking During Pregnancy opens with a short introduction featuring information that doctors typically share with pregnant women to encourage them to quit smoking: i.e., reduce the chance of a premature birth, save money, and decrease long-term health risks for both mother and child. But the bulk of this program is devoted to the “how-to” of quitting, suggesting a variety of different self-help tricks (list the times you smoke and find something else to do during those periods; always have something around to keep your hands and mouth busy; and be aware of the withdrawal symptoms), followed by a brief section on remaining smoke-free. Combining dramatic scenarios, informative graphics, section summaries, and brief interviews, the program sometimes seems a little elementary (for example, the narrator encourages viewers to “pause now and think about how you're going to handle your stress”), but given the seriousness of the health risks involved—as well as the number of pregnant smokers—this spell-it-out approach is probably best to reach the intended audience. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (A. Cantú)
